Kampala Church of Christ News Letter- 6/21/2013

Greetings from Kampala, Uganda. It is our hope and prayer that God has been keeping you well over the last Months. It’s been a while since our last publication of God’s work in Kampala. It’s been a busy season and as such finding time has been a challenge in the midst of all that continues to happen. For those of you that follow us on Facebook have at least been having a glimpse and keeping abreast to what God is doing in our lives and service to God. We encourage you all to visit our Facebook page – Kampala Church of Christ for instant news and updates as they happen.

One of the events that have been marked in the body of Christ at Kampala Church of Christ has been the new and thriving young women’s ministry, Virtuous Woman Ministry (VWM). The VWM started off last year with the sole purpose of bringing together young women of the Church into a Fellowship of sharing, Bible Study, Prayer and Community outreach. For the most part of last Month, the VWM was undergoing a Discipleship training class that was conducted by one of our leaders Mr. Methuselah Sebagala. The Discipleship class later climaxed into going out to evangelize the community of Ndejje on 5/19/2013. The Young Women reached out to several people in Ndejje. Several that were reached, confessed and received Christ. We give praise to God for the Spirit of the VWM that will go a long way in planting seeds in our communities to win souls to Christ. The VWM meets every Sunday after the service at church for Bible Study. They continue to do several projects among which were the general cleaning of the church premises and the Better Living Resource Centre on 4/13/2013. The VWM leads by example and we are all embracing what God continues to do in this ministry.

Similar to the above is the growing and dynamic Youth group that is majorly composed of University students and young adults around Kampala city. What started off with less than twenty youths meeting for Bible Study has now grown to over eighty youths meeting at Kampala Church of Christ every Sunday evenings. What is happening in this group is quiet unique because the youths that meet are a composition of several churches in and around Kampala. It is amazing to see different youths from different congregations meeting together in one place at Kampala Church of Christ to share and feed on the Word of God. We give praise to God for such an opportunity for us to reach out to these youths. To us, this means that Kampala Church of Christ has something to offer to its surrounding community and what a joy it is to know that it is nothing else other than the Word of God. Plans are underway to find ways on how to effectively serve this growing number of youths.

Last year the Kampala Church of Christ, started a weekly Discipleship Class that is designed to equip our leaders and others in reaching out to share Jesus Christ in our communities. Several of our community leaders are involved and more are being encouraged to participate in this class. On 5/11/13, the KCC discipleship class was able to mobilize its students and went out on a door to door evangelism mission in one of the communities in the out skirts of Kampala at Maganjo. Christ was preached to several. The Jesus film was also shown later in the evening as several got to listen to the Word of God.

We give praise to God for the Kampala Church of Christ projects ministry. Several Months back the Kampala Church of Christ Chicken Project received a $1000 donation to buy more chickens to add on the already existing 500 chickens. The order was placed to buy more 1000 chickens that will be delivered in July 2013. Plans are underway to expand the chicken shelter to house the increase in number.

We also give praise to God for the blessing that Kampala Church of Christ has enjoyed over the last couple of years through the Christian Relief Fund Ministry (CRF). CRF has helped provide school fees, food and medical funds for children for the last couple of years in Kampala. CRF started off in Kampala in 1998 and it has helped several children to get an education. Most of the children now are at university and other institutions of higher learning. We are in the process of phasing out the older children and adding in younger orphaned, poor and needy children in our community. Among the children in the Kampala Program are those infected with HIV Aids disease. We have three children in the program with the disease. CRF has for the last couple of months been sending a special fund towards these Aids Orphans. It was later decided to use the funds wisely and be invested in a worthwhile project. The guardians of the children were all in agreement to buy sewing machines and knitting machines. Three sewing machines and three knitting machines were bought for the three families to sew and knit, cloths and sweaters for sale. The idea is for these children not to only learn how to sew and knit but to later be able to make money as they sell their products. We believe this will help the children have an extra skill to help them financially as they progress in their education and lives.

At the beginning of this year in February the Kampala Church of Christ helped start a kindergarten and Primary School project at Ndejje. We started off with a total number of seven children last term. On 4/26/2013 we closed off our first term at Elshama Junior Academy. In the last term the purple color uniform for the kids and the school badge were designed. School Reports were handed out on this day. The parents of the children were all affirming of the good improvement in their children. Several promises have been made from the neighborhood of parents planning to send their children to Elishama Junior Academy to acquire a Christian based Education and values in this mostly infested Moslem community. There is so much that is still needed for the school to function effectively. We have been blessed by few volunteers from Kampala Church of Christ who give their time to teach the children on a weekly basis. There is still lack of a few resources and materials but God has been faithful in allowing us to be creative with what we have. We kindly ask of you to join with us in prayer for funds to hire more teachers and other needed materials at the school. At the moment, the construction of a parameter wall is underway at the school as is required by the Education authorities. We were given until this Month of June 2013 for an inspection of the school to be done so that Elishama Junior Academy can acquire a license. We ask that you join with us in prayer for this to happen as well. Currently a lot of administrative planning is being done. A budget and plan for the school are being constructed by the school administration. At the moment Elshama Junior Academy, is our genie pig for a primary school to be started in Wakiso.

Related to the above, we give praises to God once again for yet another blessing that came in form of land in Wakiso. Mr. Methuselah Sebgagla, one of our committed members at KCC donated land to the church. Plans are underway to transfer the Title deed into the names of the Kampala Church. Among the many plans for this land is to put up a church building and a primary school on this piece of land. Please be in prayer as we learn from the Elishama Junior Academy Project to establish a school in Wakiso.

Praises go up to God for Nancy Harbron and Carmen Myer who are visiting in Kampala. They flew into Kampala on 6/6/13 and will be with us till 7/10/13. It is Carmen’s first visit in Africa. Nancy has been here several times. Nancy, Carmen and a team of three volunteers who teach at Elshama Junior Academy and project leaders took a working trip to Kenya to visit some of the schools that have been started by the Christian Relief Fund (CRF). The purpose for the visit in Kenya was to learn from the already established schools so that we could do the same in Uganda. Four of these schools were visited from 6/11/13 to 6/14/13. Thanks go to Jake Reeves who received and hosted the team and Francis Bii who showed us around the schools. A lot was learned from the Kenya visit. It was very helpful for us to learn from our Kenyan brothers and sisters and how God continues to bless and use them as they help teach and take good care of the children. The Christian Relief Fund is helping thousands of needy and orphaned children in Kenya. CRF has also helped build schools in most parts of Kenya. It is our prayer and hope that we borrow a leaf from Kenya for the many abandoned, orphaned and needy children in Uganda by establishing a centralized system of administration in form of a school set up that would be different from the existing widely spread out sponsored children in different schools in Kampala.

In our last newsletter that was posted we shared about another project for a guesthouse at kira on a piece of land that is owned by our former missionary and friend Dir. Ellen West. Plans are underway and currently we have a proposal that has been designed that has a blue print about the whole plan for the Kampala Church of Christ guesthouse. We ask of your prayers for us to have the time and patience to do all these projects for the glory of God.
We would want to bring to your attention about one of our members, a CRF sponsored kid who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Rechael Nakabiri has always been very active in church. Our community has been shocked with the news as she has always been a very healthy kid. We ask that you lift up Rechael in prayer. We thank you all who have been praying and supporting her during this time. She is currently on medication but continues to go to school. She has a very positive attitude and we thank God for that. She will be soon be going for chemotherapy.
